It's a sad duty that brings Alafair Tucker to Enid, Oklahoma, in the fall of 1915. Her sister Ruth Ann's husband, Lester, is not long for this world, and the family is gathering to send him to his reward. Alafair's eldest daughter Martha has volunteered to come along and care for toddler Grace, freeing Alafair to comfort the soon-to-be-bereaved. But where is Kenneth, her niece's irresponsible husband? When it comes to light that Kenneth has been involved in some shady dealing with Buck Collins, the most ruthless businessman in town, everyone is convinced that Collins has done him in. In fact, no other possibility is considered. But Alafair suspects that things are not so simple, and with help from Martha, Grace, and her sister's cat, she sets about to discover the truth about Kenneth's fate. Over the next few days, Alafair and Martha come face-to-face with blackmail, intimidation, murder, and family secrets that stretch back over twenty years. And in the process, they discover things about each other that will change their relationship forever.

The Sky Took Him An Alafair Tucker Mystery Donis Casey 9781458731005 Books

I have enjoyed each one of Donis Casey's Alafair Tucker mysteries. They are a charming combination of period mystery and family saga. The writing sets the tone of the period and the plot takes enough turns to be an enjoyable puzzle. I appreciate the way each of Alafair and Shaw's children take a turn at center stage with their parents (they have ten of them!) and it gives the reader a chance to get to know each one. This book is no different from the rest of hers in this aspect. I have read everything she has written to date and have yet to be disappointed. The series can be read out of order, but I would recommend starting at the beginning and following Alafair's adventures and that of her lively brood in chronological order. Give the books a try. You are missing great reads if you don't.

The Sky Took Him An Alafair Tucker Mystery Donis Casey 9781458731005 Books Reviews

I really enjoy these stories and I love the "surprise" ending. I had not anticipated that!
Finished all five of Donis Casey's books and loved them all. Good stories, well-drawn characters, and I can absolutely taste the lovely food Alafair Tucker feeds her family, which is authentic farm food reminiscent of my Grandmother's Kansas farm cooking. These books are historically accurate and interesting for that reason, but mainly I like them because the author knows how to tell good stories - something which is sometimes forgotten in mystery writing. These are consistently interesting, complex and well done. I recommend all five and am anxiously waiting for the sixth.
I’m afraid I felt like I was watching an episode of Little House on the Prairie. Read this in my book club and I prefer much grittier mysteries.
Having lived for awhile in Oklahoma, the setting of this novel intrigued me. Having already read a couple others in the series, I am completely sold on the author, Donis Casey, and consider her a true original. I consumed this book as I did the others, reveling in the strong characters, particularly the strong women, all of who are main characters in the novel, including the heroine who is a sharp, clever lady, intelligent enough to solve murders right under the noses of the men (whom the author does not make into buffons, but keeps totally real and true to character, down to their chores, clothes, and vocabulary).
Particularly delightful, including the fact that this is a perfectly wonderful murder mystery set at the turn of the 20th century in rough and tumble Oklahoma, not too long after the "sooners" are still a fresh memory. Native Americans are part of the family heritage of the main characters in the novel, which adds to the historical spice. This Cherokee mix is all part of my Arkansas heritage which made the story even more real to me!
I was taken back to the language of my grandma and grandpa, who lived during this time. The idioms, colloquialisms and quaint language wwere not used in a self-concious,"precious" way but sounded just like my grandparents and great aunts and uncles talked! You have to read it for the joy of the language, if nothing else!
I just recently discovered this historical fiction series set in the 19-teens in Oklahoma. I love the very down-to-earth Alafair and her husband. Their marriage and family relationships and ties are to be envied if you are a traditionalist. The peek into early twentieth century life on a farm brings back many memories of stories I heard from my grandmother who led a similar life. Very comforting. Makes me wish we could turn back time. The books contain historical tidbits about the Cherokee and the Trail of Tears. Being from a part of the country where the Trail of Tears began, and having Cherokee ancestors, I enjoy the Oklahoma perspective in these books. The murder mysteries in these stories are just an added bonus! I highly recommend this series if you like cozy, historical mysteries!
The author is brilliant. Suspensful, down-homey writing that gives a historical feel and insights into 1900 era Oklahoma. Intuition laced mystery solving dramas, which are interwoven within the life of a large family. Great recipes used by the main character, and informational tidbits usually follow the end of the story. The family works together and loves eachother, believes in God, has mystical guidance from their indian ancestry, and is compassionate and considerate of others. I make time to read each night and look forward to my time with these whodunnits. Great book and I highly recommend the entire series. Love this author!
Ms Casey has woven another fascinating mystery story, entwined with the history of twentieth-century, Oklahoma. The author touches on the changing role of women in America's pre-war period. Casey's ability to tell a compelling, believable tale of a simple farm family and wrap it around historical facts, is nothing short of brilliant.

It is September of 1915 and Alafair Tucker along with two of her daughters, Martha, the eldest and three-year-old Grace, are on a train heading for Enid, Oklahoma. Alafair's long ailing, brother-in-law is dying and her sister, Ruth Ann has requested her presence. Ruth Ann's son-in-law, Kenneth seems to have taken a business trip just when he is needed most, Leaving his wife, Olivia to handle her family's business.

After their arrival in Enid, Alafair realizes there's a lot about Kenneth and his business dealings that just don't add up. When Kenneth doesn't return and Olivia has had no word from him, Alafair and Martha begin to investigate.

Casey introduces many characters, lots of twists and turns, romance, a touch of the paranormal, and of course... mystery. The Sky Took Him is a superb addition to The Alafair Tucker series.
