" TOUGH SKIN is an invention of glittering grotesqueries. Part librarian, part Georges Bataille, part crazy old lady, these poems-stories-whatever-they-are will haunt you like a drunken uncle waiting for you in the bushes. They will stick to your brain like shadow. Dark, disgusting, gorgeous, hilarious There is nothing like this book. Sarah Eaton is from the future. -Kathryn Regina, author of I Am in the Air Right Now Sarah Eaton has created an utterly original world in which the sacred and the profane, the hideous and the beautiful, the lover and the monster, are indistinguishable counterparts. Even the most depraved inhabitants of TOUGH SKIN are not only charming and erudite, but ultimately endearing creatures, capable of transformation, redemption, and profound, unorthodox love. -Megan Martin, author of Sparrow and Other Eulogies Tough Skin, Sarah Eaton's rewriting of the history of the future as well as the erasure of the future's past, made me swoon. The tender unbuttoning of language induced in me a full-blown vaso-vagal syncope, not simply from the vivid disrupted tissue deconstruction rendered here in spades but from the hyped-up hypnotic gross anatomy of grammar, syntax, and sass that makes my 10th cranial nerve twitch, fidget, and yak. This prose poses a visceral threat, the poetics flail. Who knew there were so many layers of skin to skin? Sarah Eaton rings this bell, pulls this trigger. Like that, she floors me. -Michael Martone, Author of Michael Martone

She must wash her hands in the air and cackle with pure evil before setting these poems to page. They are even better than the blurbs indicate. Sparks fly from her fingertips and I bet her hair is wrecked by how much electricity comes out of her brain. This has a truly wayward inventor claiming and citing patents, taking credit for the invention of elastic and excess. Then there's time-travel, drunken uncles, monstrous pets, coffin cradles, a chaperone who allows two human touches per day for each young lady, attempts to replace human eyes with rat mouths, hints on how to kill people with your next painting, gross anatomy that swaggers across the page in glories of dismemberment. This sails beyond 'the cuteness of the avant-garde' or mere surrealism lite. The odd premises are explored with abandon that leaves real blood on the page. Comparisons might be made to authors such as Josh Bell, James Tate, Juliet Cook plus maybe the band Agent Ribbons (see: Bird in the Mirror) and of course the clever seamstresses at Venom Literati. I burned through it in an afternoon and then handed it to my 13-year-old thinking,"Yeah. That'll blow his head off--make up for all of the lousy poetry he's been exposed to."Product details

Tough Skin Sarah Eaton 9781935402619 Books Reviews
First the phrasing hits you, then the humor, then the insight, then you are intrigued and then really want to meet her.
I love this book. I have read it three times. The first time I did not know if I was smart enough to read something so different and I just looked over the pictures and laughed, The art was fun and if the art seemed to be telling a story, what was the story of 'Tough Skin.' There must have been something in this book for me. The second time I flirted with it and read different pages; sometimes a paragraph, sometimes just one sentence. The third time has been ongoing. I read it front to back, back to front, and in the middle. It got me thinking, it caught me off guard, and sometimes I even feel as smart, funny, and intriguing as the writer who wrote it. Very interesting thought provoking writing style and art.
